Our class schedules at SciencesPo are quite cool because, apart from Wednesdays, we never really have class in the afternoon. This means that, at least once a week I can turn to my delightful partner in crime and ask "Do you want to do something touristy this afternoon?"
Often, we do. We can stop by Notre Dame, take a stroll up to Sacre Coeur, or swing by the Louvre. This Thursday we decided to buy some lunch and head to the Père Lechaise cemetery. It's a really beautiful place - crumbling tombs and crypts line the winding footpaths. We froze out butts off, but it really makes for a cool visit. Some great photo opportunities - cracked gravestones dead famous people :) we only had time to find one incredibly famous person: Oscar Wilde. His epic tombstone is protected by a plexiglass cover to prevent people doodling on it, but despite the barrier, people have figured out a way to leave their mark. The transparent sheet is covered in lipstick kisses. It's quite a thing to see, and to be honest I was sad I wasn't the kind of girl who has lipstick in her purse. Ag well. I'll just go back :)
The other not-quite touristy thing was not-touristy for two reasons: 1) lots and LOTS of French people were there; 2) it didn't REALLY happen. It was the 6 Nations Rugby game between France and Ireland. Tash and I managed to buy some cheaper tickets from a South African guy in Paris (Hugh was so nice - such a comfort to speak to someone with a slightly Afrikaans accent), and off we went to Stade de France wearing almost all the clothes we had. Lots of drunk fans and slurred singing added to the already epic atmosphere, but alas, after 15 minutes of delayed kickoff, they announced that the pitch was too dangerous to play on and postponed the game (much to the disappointment of 80,000 slightly inebriated fans). So we made our happy way home, tickets saved for an upcoming rescheduled match. Wasn't too much of a disappointment, considering we live here now :)
So yeah. One and a half exciting things. I need to blog more often, so these posts don't become too long and boring. If you're reading this in SA, I really really miss you. I'm feeling the void of a good friend from way-away. Perhaps some hot chocolate will fill the void, for now :)
